Braised Brussels sprouts

braised brussels sprouts

Brussels sprouts have got to be one’a the easiest things to make. As long as you cook ’em long enough, they tender up and you’re golden.

The date was a whim, to see if a little sweetness might be nice, then it turned into more of a garnish. The sweetness is not really all that necessary … These lil guys are delish all on their own!

Sometimes I’d see people sprinkling them with diced bacon and the look of the dates reminded me of that. I like things that have the same visual appeal or consistency of the decadent meals but none of the bad-for-you’ness. Tricks my mind somehow and ups the enjoyment factor.

. . . . . . . . . . . .

Braised Brussels Sprouts Recipe

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 pound Brussels sprouts, halved
  • Garlic powder
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 small hunk Romano cheese, freshly grated
  • 1 medjool date, diced (optional)

Place olive oil and Brussels sprouts in a large frying pan on medium heat. Sprinkle with salt and garlic powder, toss to coat, then arrange Brussels sprouts cut side down in pan. Cover with lid and heat til slightly browned, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let sit, covered, til Brussels sprouts are tender, about 15 min. Sprinkle with freshly ground black pepper, grated Romano cheese and diced date if desired. Enjoy!

Note: I grated the cheese a bit coarse the first time … as you can see! Next time I grated it on fine into a little pile and it was a hundred times better. Do that! 🙂
